5 tips to earn more money in 2020, by Arièle Bonte
If you like symbols and cycles as much as I do, you will be pleased. We are about to enter a new era: with the transition to 2020 of course, but also the beginning of another decade. It’s the perfect time to take stock, reset the meter and develop (good) habits regarding your lifestyle and, above all, your relationship with money.
The first step to take control of your finances is to set a budget – and stick to it. Make an inventory of your expenses (from rent, utilities, food expenses, your telephone subscription, weekend movie nights, your morning coffee to go, your student loan to pay back, etc.) and your income (salaries, investments, etc.). Then see how you can make the most of your money:
– Reduce or cut unnecessary expenses (the subscription to the gym you never go to, the cost of your phone contract which has doubled after a year of good and loyal service, your umpteenth take away of the week). As Chelsea Fagan explains in her book, The Financial Diet, « a dollar not wasted is just as good as a dollar earned ».
– Learn how to put money aside for hard times (a long period of sick leave, an electronic device to buy in an emergency, an unexpected job loss).
– Automate transfers from one bank account to another to pay your rent and utilities, save money, make contributions.
In short, stop burying your head in the sand by not watching what happens and praying that everything will be all right at the end of the month. With this method, Excel will become your best friend and you will have at any time a global vision of your fortune (current or future).
2. Break the taboo
Step two: talk about money around you. Put the subject on the table during your drinks with friends, ask your colleagues how much they earn, how they negotiated their first salary and how they manage on a daily basis. Are you broke by the end of the month? Don’t be ashamed to say so. Learn to say no. No to solicitations from all sides that force us to go out every weekend, to spend money to socialize. Reinvent your relationships with others. Enjoy a walk in the park instead of a 6 euro coffee on a terrace. Make money a fun, accessible subject and normalize it by regularly consulting books, podcasts, and blogs.
3. Learn to say yes
Being open to money is a state of mind. Refusing unwanted solicitations is one thing, but learning to say yes to what really pleases you is another. It’s a fascinating work of introspection, but it can be very demanding: it forces us to ask ourselves about the education we received, the relationship our parents had with the money, how it was transmitted, how it was responded to, etc. In the long run, the idea is to free ourselves from our old habits and to build our own way of thinking in order to move towards greater freedom!
4. Take Action
In The Financial Diet, the author explains that it is always good to have another source of income other than work. If the subject is aimed at privileged people (under contract, with time to spare), it is no less interesting: becoming a mystery shopper, offering foreigners to practice their French with you online, going freelance for one-off missions, selling the clothes you no longer wear, investing in a project… the solutions are many and can allow you to discover new passions, meet people outside your usual circle and develop your skills.
But where you have more room for manoeuvre is with your current job and especially your salary: in 2020, you will be negotiating. Ask for a raise, extra benefits, increase your service prices… Find out about the market you are in, see
where you stand and make an appointment. You are legitimate, you deserve it.
Are you a business manager? Self-employed? You have a taste for risk and experimentation? Are you tired of being seen as a woman before being seen as a professional? You can do like Penelope Gazin and Kate Dwyer who, in 2017, decided to invent within their company the existence of a partner, Keith Mann. A man, as you will have understood, who would communicate with clients or potential partners of their project by email. The differences in treatment were notable and Penelope Gazin and Kate Dwyer were able, thanks to this fictitious man, to get their project off the ground more quickly.
of this story is not to say that you have to invent a male partner when you don’t have one. Rather, it’s about knowing the rules of the entrepreneurial game. That way, you’ll be able to find the right solutions to break through the barriers and shatter that damn glass ceiling that prevents women from climbing the ladder as fast as their male counterparts.
